Watauga County Farmers' Market will accept food donations on Saturdays for food insecure individuals and families. The Society of St. Andrews will be collecting and distributing the donations to local help organizations. Our farmers have been donating surplus produce for quite some time, and we would like to offer you the opportunity to help as well. You may also donate any extras you may have from your own garden. A cooler will be placed at the manager's stand for any donations.

Foggy Morning

I hope everyone is enjoying relief from this summer's heat. There will likely be summer vegetables for several more weeks and you can also expect late season goodies such as apples and pumpkins. Faith Mountain Farm will have the last of the sourwood honey along with a good supply of summer basswood honey. Their outside bounty also includes shiitake mushrooms, red, white, and blue potatoes, and butternut and spaghetti squash and whole grain breads, muffins, cinnamon rolls, scones, cookies, and granola from the inside.

Sunshine Cove Farm will have microgreens, tomatoes and Russian banana potatoes. Zydeco Moon will have delicious heirloom tomatoes such as Cherokee purple, red and yellow Brandywines and green zebras along with beets, acorn and delicata squash and arugula. Tumbling Shoals Farm will be roasting peppers again this week. Come get your poblanos roasted for chiles rellenos! They will also have butternut squash, okra, basil, more of those sensuous tube roses, some of Shiloh’s mixed bouquets and butterfly weed. Goldenrod Gardens will have Baby Lettuce Mix Mini Belle Peppers which are great stuffed for a bite sized appetizer and Lee will share a great recipe with you. Pink Tip heirloom beans are still going, be sure to grab some to save seeds. They are yummy young and tender or shelled as the tips turn pink. You will also find ate summer wreaths, just a few small ones to celebrate this season, they will dry beautifully.

Rebecca Kaenzig will be offering country ham biscuits, cheese biscuits, spinach and feta scones along with iced coffee and peppermint iced tea.

Sandi Henry is dividing her garden and will have available hostas, day lilies, phlox, blue Stokes asters, and Shasta daisies at $1.00 apiece. Plant now for a beautiful summer garden for years to come. She will also have autumn colored baskets, garden bricks, and sunflower greens. Shady Grove Gardens & Nursery will have plenty of lovely cut flowers including Limelight Hydrangeas for drying, bold colored Dahlias and beautiful pink snowberries.

Caron Baker Wike from 'Wishful Thinking Studio' will have have hundreds of her funky lace and leaf pots on hand. Many of the leaf pots will be autumn colors, and they are all food-safe glazes. She will also be bringing back her handmade purses and primitive pet paintings.

The Wednesday markets will be held on Wednesday afternoons for the 2010 season. The hours have been moved up to 3 - 6 PM every week through September. The market is having great success on EBT acceptance, you can call 1-828-355-4918 for more information on using EBT at the market.
